Halo5

343’s Andy ‘Bravo’ Dudynsky and Twitch’s Alex ‘Goldenboy’ Mendez hosted a livestream that highlighted both new Halo 5: Guardians gameplay as well as the game’s new spectator mode. In this livestream, 343’s Josh Holmes joined the show to answer fan questions as well as announce a few things regarding the beta. One of these announcements was a handful of details regarding the Halo 5 Beta schedule. Below is a list of the playlists, gametypes, and maps you will see throughout all three weeks of the Halo 5 Beta.

  • Week 1: Slayer (AR Starts):
Halo 5: Guardians Beta will feature the same content from the early-access period. Slayer with Assault Rifle starts will be played on Truth, the reimagining of Midship, as well as Empire, a new symmetrical map featuring the Sniper Rifle.

  • Week 2: Slayer (BR Starts) and Breakout (SMG Starts):
Play Slayer on two remix maps, Regret and Eden. Both of these maps feature similar themes from the previous maps (Truth and Empire) but have new geometry, weapons and strategies. Josh Holmes announced that players will be able to vote on one of two weapons that will appear as a Power Weapon on Regret.

Breakout is Halo 5’s new round-based Slayer gametype. Each player has one life each round and the first team to eliminate all enemy players wins the round. The first team to take five rounds wins the match. This gametype features SMG starts with ‘heightened lethality’, meaning all kill times are slightly faster than standard modes. Two maps will be featured in this playlist: Crossfire and Trench, both designed from the ground up for the Breakout gametype.

  • Week 3: Strongholds (New Objective Mode):
A new objective gamemode that 343 has not yet talked about. Strongholds appears to feature some form of territory based gametype, however we are currently unsure exactly how this gamemode will play. In addition, 343 has announced that players will be able to vote to decide what maps are played during the Week 3 portion of the beta.

Last month, I promised the Halo and Xbox community that addressing the matchmaking issues and other bugs impacting players’ experience with Halo: The Master Chief Collection was our #1 priority. We’ve been working around the clock deploying weekly content updates and numerous server-side adjustments that have shown good results and we’re encouraged by the feedback we’re hearing from you. Another big challenge was met when we added fan-favorite playlists, such as SWAT and Halo: CE, back to our matchmaking menu and we plan to add more soon. Next week, we’ll release a content update that will add all 10 episodes of the cooperative experience “Spartan Ops” for Halo 4, and will address other issues. I assure you that the team will continue to work on additional content updates to further improve the all-up gameplay experience.

This has been a humbling experience and highlighted how we as a studio can – and need – to do better for Xbox fans around the world. We are so grateful to our fans who have stood by our side and we appreciate all of your patience as we worked through these issues. As a token of our appreciation and to thank fans for the continued support and understanding, we will be offering the following items, for free, to anyone who has played Halo: The Master Chief Collection online since launch (11.11.14) through today (12.19.14).*

  • 1) 1 Month of Xbox Live Gold
  • 2) Exclusive In-Game Nameplate
  • 3) Exclusive In-Game Avatar

* For specifics on eligibility and further details on the offer, visit the FAQ here.

Additionally, you’ve told us that you want more Halo 2: Anniversary multiplayer map content and Halo 3: ODST on Xbox One. As a future bonus, we’re going to make these happen and give them to you for free. We are just now starting work with our partners to bring both to Halo: The Master Chief Collection and will share more specific details on timing in the coming months. But for now, here’s what you can expect:

  • 4) Halo 3: ODST Campaign – Development has just started on the campaign for Halo 3: ODST, which will be available within Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and upgraded to 1080p resolution, running at 60fps. It will be available for free to anyone who has played Halo: The Master Chief Collection since launch (11.11.14) through today (12.19.14).* Thanks to our friends at Bungie for creating the original “Halo 3: ODST” campaign.

  • 5) "Relic" Halo 2: Anniversary Multiplayer Map – Available via a free content update to Halo: The Master Chief Collection, we will reimagine the fan-favorite map “Relic,” fully remastered and running at 1080p resolution and 60fps. We chose this map based on its suitability for Slayer and Objective modes and its ability to support teams of varying sizes. And you can trust that Certain Affinity will tune and tweak the map to make it even better than you remember.

The satisfaction and joy of our fans is absolutely critical to everyone at 343 Industries and we regret the issues and the frustration you have endured. We are truly sorry and thank you for your continued patience and support of the Halo franchise.

Sincerely,
Bonnie Ross
Head of 343 Industries

At the time of this writing, there are approximately five days left until the 11th day of November. In past years, this date may not have held great significance, but if you’re like us, you may have had a figurative “X” on the calendar since June of this year.

In just five days’ time, experiences both familiar and new await. On its 10-year anniversary, Halo 2 will return to Xbox Live, and bring with it a broad package of games and content. A newly re-mastered Campaign as well as a suite of re-mastered multiplayer maps have been prepared in Halo 2: Anniversary. Halo: Combat Evolved will make its Xbox Live debut, and perhaps even provide an opportunity for some of you to play the game that started it all for the first time. Halo 3 and Halo 4 (along with all other titles) will make their Xbox One debut in full HD at 60fps. The Halo Channel will be your new home for entertainment and programming, including the first episode of Halo: Nightfall. In addition, new terminals, hundreds of achievements, and more await. Your journey is about to begin, and we hope you’re as excited as we are.

This week, we have a few new topics to cover, including skulls, LASO playlists, ranks, a new eSports league, and more. Let’s get to it.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection - Skulls & LASO Playlists

Skulls

Over the past few months, we’ve discussed skulls and campaign playlists, but now seems like an appropriate time to dig into these, especially when you consider that this is the last chance to do so. To get the latest, I grabbed Max Szlagor, Senior Designer on The Master Chief Collection, who proceeded to give me so much information that I just had to write it down. These etchings have been transcribed below.

The Master Chief Collection includes 37 different skulls, including several unique additions to Halo 2: Anniversary. Skulls are modifiers that can change Campaign gameplay in a variety of ways, and are closely tied to the Campaign scoring and timing systems, as well as leaderboards. With the exception of the pre-order skulls (which will unlock globally on December 12, noted with an *) and Swarm, every skull is unlocked and available from the start. Skulls are broken down into two categories: Scoring and Non-Scoring. Scoring skulls amp up the challenge and reward players with higher score multipliers or bonuses to base enemy values when turned on. Non-Scoring skulls can either be neutral, such as Grunt Birthday Party, or in cases of cheat-like skulls, have a score multiplier of zero. Zero multiplier skulls like Scarab disqualify level times and scores from being recorded on the leaderboard and disable achievements.

Click here for a full run down of the entire skull list along with the games each skull appears in.

LASO Playlists

As many of you may have noticed, a number of achievements reward players for completing the LASO (Playing on Legendary with “all skulls on”) Campaign playlists in Halo: The Master Chief Collection. These achievements can be earned in either solo or co-op play.

Here is more info on which skulls are enabled for each LASO playlist:

Halo CE: Anniversary

  • Black Eye, Boom, Fog, Eye Patch, Foreign, Famine, Malfunction, Recession

Halo 2: Anniversary

  • Anger, Assassins, Black Eye, Blind, Boom, Catch, Fog, Eye Patch, Famine, Iron, Jacked, Malfunction, Masterblaster, Mythic, Recession, SO…ANGRY…, Streaking, That’s Just…Wrong, They Come Back, Thunderstorm

Halo 3

  • Black Eye, Blind, Catch, Cowbell, Famine, Fog, Grunt Birthday Party, Iron, IWHBYD, Mythic, Thunderstorm, Tilt, Tough Luck

Halo 4

  • Black Eye, Blind, Catch, Fog, Cowbell, Famine, Iron, Mythic, Thunderstorm, Tilt, Tough Luck

Each of these skulls should provide you with an opportunity to replay past missions (or play them for the first time!) with a variety new surprises, explosions, difficulty, and creativity. And with nearly all skulls unlocked, you have no excuses. Enjoy!

Halo: The Master Chief Collection - Ranking System

Since we detailed The Master Chief Collection’s ranking system with IGN,we have seen a few inquiries regarding further specifics, so we figured we’d talk a bit more about it.

As you’ve heard, the ranking system lives at the playlist level, meaning that you’ll have an independent skill-based rank for each ranked playlist. We also modified matchmaking to use new skill detection, which will put players into the fairest matches faster than any Halo game to date.

Additionally, we built Halo: The Master Chief Collections’ ranking system to emulate the exact Halo 2-style leveling, but it is a system that has been built from the ground up. This is the first time we’ve built a Matchmaking and ranking system that will work across multiple games, and as a result, we’ll be rolling out ranking for each playlist post-launch, and will launch with one ranked playlist, Team Halo 2: Anniversary. As time goes on, we’ll be rolling out the official ranked version for each ranked playlist. For example, the Halo 3 and Halo 4 playlists will not be ranked immediately at launch (however, they will still have skill matchmaking underneath to ensure balanced matches), but will each receive ranked play post-launch. As this is a new system custom built for this game, we do expect some players to make every effort to exploit the system, and will be agile in issuing fixes and updates. Additionally, if needed, we will reset ranks after launch to ensure that all player’s ranks are fair, consistent, and accurate. We’ll provide more details on ranking and the playlist ranking rollout in the near future.

Lastly, we have seen a few questions regarding where you rank will appear (specifically if it appears in the pre-game lobby) so this week, we grabbed a pre-game lobby Matchmaking screenshot from Halo: The Master Chief Collection. As you’ll see below, in Matchmaking, your rank will indeed be displayed in the pregame lobby, which means that you’ll be able to see the ranks of those you’re playing with and against before the match.

"Halo: The Master Chief Collection has gone GOLD! This is a massive milestone for the team and also means that the game will be available for Pre-Order and Pre-Download later today. From the start, our philosophy has been to give Halo fans the best possible experience and not compromise the quality or features of the collection. The result is that Halo: The Master Chief Collection will take up almost all of the usable space of a single Blu-ray (45 GB), and we will also issue a content update at launch that is estimated to be 20 GB. You’ll be able to start playing Campaign and more as the content is installing, with some features and multiplayer content being added via the update." - Dan Ayoub

Pre-order Skull you get when buying it digitally through Microsoft:

The Xbox Live playlists each Halo game supports is always a critical thing to Halo fans. The playlists go a long way towards influencing how players spend their time in the ranked environment. Popular gametypes can bubble up as their own playlists (Shotty Snipers! Team Snipers! Grifball!), and bad ones can go away and be replaced by something more interesting. It’s especially critical with The Master Chief Collection, as the developers at 343 Industries have to juggle what the community wants across not one but four Halo games. You can’t have too many playlists without spreading players too thin, but you also need enough to satisfy everyone’s individual game and gametype preferences. Without further delay, here are 343’s launch-day playlists for Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

Team Halo 2: Anniversary

Play a mix of Team Slayer and objective game types on re-mastered maps. 4v4.

Halo 2: Anniversary Rumble

Challenge seven other opponents on re-mastered maps. This is your fight and yours alone. 8-player Free-For-All.

Team Halo 2: Anniversary Social

Play with a team in unranked Team Slayer and objective game types on re-mastered maps. 5v5.

Team Slayer

Eliminate the enemy team across four Halo games: Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 2: Anniversary. Nothing but Team Slayer, 24/7. 4v4.

Big Team Battle

Battle it out in 16-player warfare with vehicles across Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 4, and Halo 2: Anniversary. 8v8.

Halo: Combat Evolved

The game that started it all. Play a mix of Slayer and objective game types in Halo: Combat Evolved for the first time on Xbox Live. 4v4.

Halo 2 Classic

It’s back. A mix of the most popular Team Slayer and objective game types from the original Halo 2. 4v4.

Halo 3

A selection of fan-favorite Team Slayer and objective game types from Halo 3. 4v4.

Halo 4

A mix of Team Slayer and objective game types from Halo 4, on a selection of small to medium-sized maps. 5v5.

Team Hardcore

A collection of tournament-approved game types from Halo 2 and Halo 3. The Battle Rifle is your primary weapon. 4v4.

Halo eSports

The official Halo eSports playlist. 4v4.

SWAT (Rotational)

Aim for the head! A collection of SWAT game types on our favorite maps from Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 4, and Halo 2: Anniversary. Players have no shields and are equipped with rifles. 4v4.

SEGA has officially announced Alien: Isolation, a first person survival-horror game developed by Creative Assembly.

Due for release in late 2014, Alien: Isolation will be available on PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, and will be set on a decommissioned trading station on the fringes of space. Invoking the spirit of Ridley Scott's classic 1979 film, you'll be tasked with avoiding the ruthless Xenomorph stalking the shadows.
